Modernism in Europe and America, 1900-1945
Munich, Germany
Module 11 presents the art of the early 20th century and the establishment of the avant-garde. Western culture was confronted by wars, economic hardship, and a never before seen cultural confusion. Artists responded in new ways with new art forms, ultimately defining what we now refer to as “avant-garde”. Also, a new trend of seeking non-classical forms, African and primitive art emerged- all highlighting an emphasis on abstraction. One theme was constant in the art of the period: art concerned itself more with interior vision rather than exterior reality. Artists of this stylistic period chose to represent personal expression and saw themselves as now freed from governing cultural or religious patrons.
