Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Symbolism: Europe and America, 1870-1900
Giverny, France
Module 10 presents the art of the late 19th century- Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and the Fin-de-Siècle. In the wake of the Modernization of Paris, Impressionism sought to provide a sketch of the ever-changing modern world. Impressionist artists asked the question, how does this scene immediately appear to the artist’s eye? The artists of Post-Impressionism set the trend for artists seeking to develop new art forms in a more modern world. The Fin-de-Siècle spawned the Arts and Crafts movement, the Art Nouveau style, and Symbolism as each focused on natural forms and hand craftsmanship as a way of reviving the handicrafts of a by-gone time.
